Delhi Commission for Women rescued a 30-year-old woman, who had been taken hostage by her parents in 2012 as they opposed her marriage due to caste issues.

DCW, along with the Gurugram Police, rescued her after they received a call from her husband, an employee of an MNC, on their helpline number 181.

The woman's parents had held her hostage for seven years and had also managed an ex-parte divorce. She will be now re-marrying her ex-husband after the gap and will be provided with protection by the Gurgaon court.

The couple had met eight years ago in a Jaipur college where both of them were pursuing Engineering. In April 2011, they had gotten married. The families, however, were kept in the dark due to caste differences.

After several attempts and murder threats from the woman's parents, the couple had eloped in January 2013 but were soon called back to the woman's home. She had since been held hostage by her parents.

"Theirs is a beautiful story of love and endurance. It is so tragic that their parents cannot feel their love due to their own arrogance. Strongest action should be taken against such parents. I am thankful that finally the girl has been rescued after seven years. The Commission shall always support them and we wish them all the best," said Swati Maliwal, Chief, DCW.

On October 23, she tried to escape her house but was caught. She then managed to contact her ex-husband who informed DCW about her situation. DCW then called the local Police Station in Gurgaon and the girl was rescued. The girl's family threatened the MNC employee that they will murder him. The man was then safely taken to Gurgaon court by DCW counselors.

The Gurgaon court has ordered protection for the couple and has kept them in a safe house. The couple has informed DCW that they will get married again soon. The DCW has written to DCP Delhi Police for ensuring their long-term protection.
