A pregnant woman delivered her baby in the ambulance in the wee hours of Wednesday when she was being taken to Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital in Rohini. The medical staff of the Centralised Ambulance Trauma Services (CATS) helped the woman as she gave birth to a baby boy mid-way.
The ambulance control room received a call from Beta-96 Mubarakpur Dabas route at 2:43 am for a delivery. Soon after the call, CATS pilot, KK Dangi, and para-medical staff, Puran Mal, reached the spot and since the woman, Aasma earlier used to consult doctors at the Ambedkar Hospital, the family insisted that she be taken there for delivery, despite the distance.
"After covering a distance of about seven kilometers, the woman started crying with labour pain; we tried to comfort her but she was crying uncontrollably. I then parked the ambulance on a roadside and decided to go ahead with the delivery," said Puran Mal.
Aasma delivered a healthy baby boy in the ambulance. The mother and the baby were later admitted to the nearby Sanjay Gandhi Hospital for post-delivery care and are doing fine as confirmed by Aasma's family.
"Any delay in her delivery would have led to complications. This shows that well-equipped ambulance and trained, experienced staff in the vehicle are very important in this city where we have overcrowded hospitals and huge traffic on the roads," said a medico from the hospital staff.
