In the backdrop of the alarming level of pollution in the national Capital, the Delhi government on Tuesday again directed all schools to appeal to parents to restrict the outdoor activities of their children.

The air quality in Delhi turned to 'very poor' on Monday due to the impact of scattered drizzle and movement of more vehicles.

"Schools are directed to explain to parents about the worrisome air pollution situation prevailing in and across Delhi and appeal to them to restrain their children from undertaking outdoor activities, till the condition persists," the Directorate of Education (DoE) said in statement.

It further said: "The outdoor activities and exposure to pollution could have long term detrimental effects on the health of children. Therefore, parents are requested to adopt preventive approach to safeguard their child's health."

The recent development comes following an advisory from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

It has recommended restricting outdoor activities for children among other measures as part of the Graded Response Plan for dealing with the pollution situation.

The CPCB's National Air Quality Index (AQI) had Delhi in the 'very poor' zone on Monday, with a score of 326. It was 292 on Sunday and 298 on Saturday. Weather forecasters have predicted the air quality will remain in the 'very poor' category, and might even deteriorate further.

Earlier this month, when the pollution level had spiked, the state government had ordered to shut all primary schools across the city. Later, all classes in private and government schools were suspended for a week.
