Delhi, this week broke all the power records and reached 6,526 MW, the highest ever.
As the power demand was at its peak, the residential areas faced frequent power cuts, leading to the residents looking for alternatives like inverters and generators.
The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Anil Baijal has recently approved the proposal made by Delhi government. As per the plan, the discoms will compensate the general public for the unscheduled power cuts in the city.
According to the compensation policy on power outages that was struck down by the High Court, a penalty of Rs 50 per hour per consumer was to be levied for the first two hours followed by Rs 100 for every subsequent hour.
The 6,000 MW-mark was breached for the first time on May 16 last year and then the demand had touched 6,261 MW on June 30 in 2016.
Many areas in Delhi experienced frequent power cuts owing to the increase in the demand.
The anticipated demand this year was 6500 MW. If demand will even reach to 8,000 MW, we have the provision to meet the requirements.
—Dr Rishi Raj Bhati, spokesperson, Delhi Transco Limited
I don't think 8,000 MW can be arranged by the government. The implementation of the compensation scheme is extremely difficult.

Power cuts are common during summer seasons. In South Delhi — Saket and Malviya Nagar suffer the most. However my locality, Kailash colony also goes through the same for an hour in every two days. I don't know what is the reason behind it? Is it like the amount of electricity consumed by the capital is extremely high, so they cut it down for sometime in a day?
—Rini Paul Chaudhury, Kailash Colony
I can only say that in Vasant Kunj I don't suffer frequent persecute. Last brief power cut was 10 days ago. We have two-three hours of power cut only once in fortnight. Apart from it we don't suffer much due to power cut.
—Malvika Kaul, Vasant Kunj
Power cuts have become common in our area this summer and what is more annoying is that these cuts happen in the night, just when we are about to go to bed. The odd timings for these cuts past midnight, ruin the next day as well
—Priti Grover, Paschim Puri
There is frequent power cut in our area specifically during summer. Last week, there was a blackout for around five hours in our locality. Now, the Delhi government is saying that it will give compensation power cut. We will see how much they will stick to their promise.
