Two Delhi Police officers posted with the Special Cell were arrested and later dismissed after they fired three rounds at a wedding function in North-East Delhi's Khajuri Khas area on Saturday night, following a brawl. Two cousins of the groom sustained bullet injuries and are recuperating at a city hospital.

Constable Naeem and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Irtkhab Alam posted with the south-Western range of the Special Cell had gone to attend the wedding reception of their neighbour, Mahesh Gupta. The function was being held at BR Vatika in Karawal Nagar. Gupta had invited Naeem to his wedding reception as they lived in the same locality.

After Naeem fired from his pistol, Alam made a fake call to the police stating that during the brawl, an unknown person took his pistol and fired. His lie was later caught by the police and it was him who had handed over his service revolver to Naeem. The officers were under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred. The victims have been identified as Manoj Gupta and Pooja Gupta. While Manoj sustained a bullet injury on his hand, Pooja was shot in the leg.

"Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Irtkhab Alam was arrested last night while Constable Naeem was arrested on Sunday. Under what circumstances Alam handed over the pistol to Naeem is a matter of enquiry. A case under relevant sections has been registered against them at Khajuri Khas police station," said AK Singla, DCP, North-East.

Investigating officials revealed that the quarrel started after the groom spotted someone unknown clicking the pictures of the couple at the function. Since the groom knew the photographer at the wedding, he asked his friend Naeem to check on him. As Naeem approached the photographer in question, a fight started among them.

However, Gupta later intervened and stated that he knew the photographer. During the argument, Naeem was hit by Gupta after which he left the venue. Naeem then asked his colleague Alam for his service revolver and came back and fired upon the guests. The police were informed after which the injured were rushed to the hospital and Alam was arrested. Naeem, who was absconding, was arrested on Sunday.
