Wedding celebrations land man in jail

The accused identified as Sarwan Kumar was attending his niece’s wedding in Delhi.

In a first, a 44-year-old man was arrested by the North District police for burning crackers at a wedding function in Civil Lines area on Friday evening. Keeping in mind the alarming environmental situation, Delhi government on November 7 had put a ban on burning of fire crackers in the National Capital in marriages and other events, except for religious functions saying ‘strict action will be taken against the violators’.   

The accused identified as Sarwan Kumar was attending his niece’s wedding in Delhi. The wedding was getting solemnized at Modi Bhawan in North Delhi. Kumar had already burnt sky shot crackers and was burning more when the baraat was arriving. After the pollution level in the Capital had gone up the Government had put a ban on the use and burning of firecrackers to curb the pollution level. Police officials were also asked to check the same in the area and hence their was deployment. “The beat staff were patrolling in the area and spotted him lighting a cracker. He was then taken into custody,” said a senior police officer.             

Police took suo -moto and registered a case under section 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He was arrested and later produced at a city court which granted him bail. Further investigations are underway.
