The heightened security alert in the Capital, amid reports of terrorists targetting high-profile politicians, has prompted the Delhi Police to seek a technology upgrade to secure the residences of VVIPs falling under Z and Z+ categories.

The Delhi Police are demanding hi-tech gadgets for face recognition, a database of terrorists, motion sensors and intrusion alert system. Sources said that technology normally required at borders and sensitive installations like defence establishments and airports needs to be put in place.

Vice-President Hamid Ansari, BJP President Amit Shah, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley are among the high- profile personalities under the Z+ category, and whose residences need an urgent upgrading of security technology.

In a two-page letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in the first week of October, the Delhi Police have initiated technology upgrade following the Uri attack on the army in Jammu and Kashmir. DNA has seen the letter.

"After the fidayeen (suicide bomber) attack in Uri, we reviewed the security of dignitaries who have top level security cover. On the basis of the review, we have submitted a report to the MHA asking them to upgrade the security apparatus," a senior official said. There are nearly 400 VVIPs under various categories in the Capital.

"Initially, we conducted a security audit of Z+ and Z protectees. Later, we initiated the security audit of Y and X protectees. This whole process took almost two weeks. In the meanwhile, MHA had asked to submit the details of assessment," the official added.

The two-page report mentions the shortcomings found during the audit. The Delhi Police have also flagged the need to have younger men, preferably under 50 years of age, to be deployed for VVIP security. Sources said a refresher course in firing has also been suggested.
