The war of words between Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh escalated after the latter challenged Kejriwal to come out for an open debate rather than 'making unsubstantiated statements', here on Friday.

It began when the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convener, Arvind Kejriwal took potshots at Captain Amarinder Singh during his rally in Amritsar. Posing five questions to the Punjab Congress President, he said Singh should explain why he was cheating the youth by extending false promises of job to every house.

"There are only 4 lakh sanctioned posts in Punjab and the total number of central employees is around 55 lakh. Why was he cheating the youth of Punjab with false promise of jobs," he asked. He added that Capt Amarinder was always against government jobs and he had completely banned recruitment in vacant posts when he came to power in 2002.

He further said that it was during the tenure of Capt Amarinder Singh that pension scheme for government employees was abolished then how he can promise to give pensions to employees. "AAP government would restore the old pension scheme for state employees," he said.

Taking potshots on cricketer-turned politician Navjot Siddhu's joining Congress, Kejriwal said, "Sidhu had refused to join AAP when he was denied the post of Deputy Chief Minister and it is a fact that he had decided to support Congress after he was given promise of CM's post."

Dismissing the allegations on party's jobs promise, Captain Amarinder said the people of Punjab were aware of his commitment to fulfill all his promises and asked the AAP leader to leave it to him to decide the modalities of giving jobs to the youth of the state. He challenged the AAP leader to come for an open debate with him on all substantive issues relating to the state instead of 'indulging in cheap and undignified gimmickry' ahead of the Assembly elections.

He also took to Twitter to criticise Kejriwal for allegedly 'making unsubstantiated comments'. Accusing Kejriwal of eyeing the state's chief ministerial post, Captain Amarinder Singh asked Kejriwal to declare party's CM candidate, saying people wanted to know who they were voting for.

The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee leader pointed out that his party had appointed nearly 50,000 government employees and more than 12,000 teachers through the panchayati raj institutions, besides giving thousands of jobs to people during his tenure.
