The south-east district police arrested wanted criminal Akbar alias Danish after a brief chase on Monday. As many as 13 rounds were fired during the incident. His accomplice Asif managed to escape.

According to the police, the incident took place around 3am on Monday. The cops had received a tip-off that the duo would pass from near the Eros Hotel, Nehru Place, from the Moolchand side and would go to Govindpuri to meet one of their associates around 2am.

The police team had erected barricades on the Nehru Place main road. A bullet motorcycle was seen approaching the barricade, which suddenly took a detour and started speeding. The police party then chased the bike and around 13 rounds were exchanged. The policemen who were fired at escaped unhurt as they were wearing bullet-proof gear.

While the police were successful in nabbing Akbar, his associate Asif managed to run away. A reward of Rs 25,000 was declared on him after a shootout case in Pul Prahaladpur area, where he had fired on police officers earlier. He is also wanted in more than 15 cases of robbery and snatching registered in different police stations of Delhi and some cases of attempt to murder.

Akbar told the police that his sister was married to Asif, who is also a member of the Satte alias Satya Prakash gang, which is active in north-east Delhi. He was arrested in five cases of theft and snatching reported in the very first year in joined the crime world. After he came out of jail, he started committing crime with Asif and later had a fallout with Satte, who is currently in jail.

"A sophisticated .32bore pistol, along with four live cartridges and one stolen motorcycle have been recovered from Akbar's possession. His two other associates, Asif and Mukarram, had opened fire at cops in the Pul Prahladpur area and a reward of Rs 25,000 was declared on their arrest. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway," DCP south-east Romil Baaniya said.
