Delhi's State Health Department is planning to issue a notification banning sale, purchase and even storage of all forms of chewable tobacco including guthka, khaini and zarda in the national capital from Monday onwards. iamin caught up with some Delhiites and tobocco sellers to gauge their reactions.

Punya Srivasatava (from Munirka), a Journalist by profession

It is definitely a commendable step taken by the Delhi state government. Although the hardest part would be to ensure that peddlers don't smuggle the banned items through underground sources. I do agree that bans are a bane in a democracy however, for a greater good, I welcome a ban on these cancer causing products.

Moitri Bose (from CR Park), Fashion Designer

I don't think the ban would be of any use. Smoking is also banned in public spaces. But I have seen people smoking in government buildings despite the ban. This will just promote black marketing probably. Though, I am in favour of the ban but tobacco industry is anyway booming in the country. It is not that easy to implement things on ground.

I want the city-dwellers to stay healthy. The ban will sure help in keeping the city clean. At least people will not spit around. I am positive about the ban.

Ria (from Naveen Shahdara)

It's a bold and much needed move by the Delhi government. A lot of gory images, graphics, warnings and awareness campaigns have failed to address the issue. Tobacco affects heart, liver and lungs and is the single greatest cause of preventable death. Paanwallahs' business will take a hit, but in larger interest of people's health, this is a great move and I applaud the government for the same. But it seems tobacco sellers in the capital city are not too pleased with the ban.

Mukesh Kumar, selling tobacco near Himachal Kisan Bhawan Azadpur has a Plan-B

I am very much disappointed with the decision. Anyway, those who want to consume will get it anyway. The decision will only lead to black marketing. Also, I have decided to concentrate on selling paan and cigarettes only Monday onwards because pan selling is not banned.

Pinky, another tobacco seller

Sarkar ka faisla sahi hai, lekin yahi hamari rozi roti hai. To hum kya kare or kaha jaye. Sarkar ko hamare baare me be sochna chahiye. Yeh band kar dene se berozgari or badhegi! (The government's decision is right. But this is our livelihood. The government should think about us also. If they will ban tobacco, it will lead to unemployment.)
