Thyagraj stadium was filled with cheers and accolades for meritorious students belonging to schools from Delhi, as the Directorate of Education held a felicitation ceremony on Wednesday for students from government schools.

Amidst the celebrations, Nazrul Islam, a student from the Shaheed Hemu Kalani Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya (SHKSBV), Lajpat Nagar caught everyone's attention.

Hailing from a middle class family in West Bengal, this 22-year-old visually impaired student overcame his disability to score 80 per cent marks in his Class X1I board examinations last year. Asked about the hardships he faced during the preparation process, Islam stated that he had been heavily encouraged and supported by his teachers, who, through deliberate efforts made sure he coped with the class lessons.

"Finding a writer to write my examinations was one problem that I faced, as I cannot script my own answers. But my teachers made sure I was fully equipped to face the examinations. The process was hence smooth and hassle free for me. Besides, my admission into high school was a little difficult owing to the age limit imposed by a government circular. But due to the support of the school and the Director of Education, a special order was released to allow me to continue my education. Crossing that hurdle in itself was a dream," Islam said while getting rewarded by Delhi deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

Being a hostel student in Delhi, Islam says that he now aims to crack the Common Law Entrance Test (CLAT) and further get into NLSIU Bangalore or NALSAR Hyderabad.

Speaking about Islam and other special children, the Principal of the school, BK Sharma said, "Differently abled students are second to none. Provided proper motivation, good facilities, and a healthy environment full of opportunities and encouragement, they are just as talented as the others. Nazrul today has made all of us proud".
