On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Union Minister for Urban Development and Information and Broadcasting, M Venkaiah Naidu launched "Segregation of Waste at Source Initiative" for National Capital Region at Talkatora Stadium. Arunima Sinha, first Indian amputee to climb Mount Everest and Deepa Malik, the first Indian woman to win a medal in Paralympic Games are the ambassadors for this campaign in Delhi. Meenakshi Lekhi, the national spokesperson of Bharatiya Janata Party and Praveen Prakash, director of Swacch Bharat Mission were also present along with the ambassadors.

People ranging from municipal workers to those engineers who have taken some major steps to form a greener Delhi were felicitated on this day. Hotel Leela of Delhi, Country Inn of Ghaziabad and Maurya Hotel of Gurgaon have been awarded as Green Hotel, for their excellent waste management system.

Underlining the need for management of Municipal Solid Waste the Minister said "It would help to protect environment, preservation of earth from climate change and segregation of waste to reduce the littering in the public place and make waste into the wealth by recycling. With the incorrect disposal and burning practice of solid waste resultant in climate change which cause Green House Gases in our environment." Calling it a major step towards achieving Swacch Bharat Mission, M. Venkaiah Naidu said, "This is a mission, not a commission. There has been change in the last three years. This change to form a clean India will accelerate."

Expressing her concern over the quantum of air pollution in the capital city and NCR area as well, Meenakashi Lekhi said,"If we do not take care of ecological balance, we have to face the adverse consequence. Our duty to concern about nature means to nurture the environment."
