Ensuring discipline on the roads of the national Capital caused a traffic constable to receive a thrashing. He was nearly run over and thrashed by a US citizen of Indian origin when he tried to stop the man from driving without wearing a seat belt.

The incident took place on Wednesday when Constable Narvir, who was deployed at Africa Avenue road near a flyover, with two of his senior officers, told police that he saw a silver colour Maruti Baleno car approaching and waved at the driver to stop, seeing that he was not wearing a seat belt.

"As stated by the constable, the driver first slowed down but as the cop approached his vehicle he accelerated in order to escape and Narvir narrowly escaped from coming under the vehicle. He said that when he narrated this to his Zonal Officer, the officer asked him to chase the vehicle. Narvir then sought a lift from a scooter rider and after more than a kilometre-long chase, caught hold of the car near a traffic signal, forcing the driver to pull over," said a senior police officer.

The Constable, in his complaint given to the police, claimed that when he asked the driver to park his car aside, he started abusing him.

"He got out of the car in the middle of the road and started assaulting me. He even tore my uniform and kept repeating that he was a US citizen. Meanwhile my two colleagues also arrived on the spot and a police call was made," Narvir said.

Additional DCP south, Chinmoy Biswal said that it was then that the US citizen, who was identified as Tejbir Singh Grewal, a resident of Malviya Nagar, was taken to RK Puram police station and an FIR was registered against him under IPC sections 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) following which he was arrested.
