A UP cop was shot at when the police were trying to nab a gang of auto lifters in a joint operation with the Delhi Police in southeast Delhi. One accused was arrested following a brief exchange of fire and a loaded pistol along with a stolen car was recovered from him.

According to senior police officers, it was during the early hours of Monday that a complainant, Shankar Yadav, a resident of Ramesh Market, reported that two unknown assailants had robbed him of his Indica car on gunpoint, near Okhla Mandi.

DCP southeast, Chinmoy Biswal said that on receiving this complaint, a case was immediately registered and investigations were taken up by a team of Amar Colony police station.

"A team was immediately constituted which started chasing the accused persons and the vehicle through the GPS installed in the car. As it appeared that the accused persons were headed towards Amroha in UP, senior officers of UP Police were immediately contacted and their assistance was sought. A joint team of Delhi and UP Police finally cornered the robbers in the forest of Hasanpur village in the area of Hasanpur," Biswal said.

He added the robbers turned the car towards a forest area in village Hasanpur where their car got stuck in the mud outside the forest and both the robbers started to flee inside the jungle.

"Seeing this, the joint team also followed the robbers inside the jungle, after which one of the robbers fired on the police team and Constable Arun of UP Police was injured. The police team immediately retaliated and in the fire exchange, one of the robbers who was later on identified as Abdul Saddam, from Khurja, received injuries in his leg and he was overpowered. His co-accused, however, managed to escape in the forest," the DCP said.

Police further said that upon interrogation, the accused confessed to his crime and one country-made pistol with some live rounds along with the Indica car and documents of the complainant were recovered from him.

Biswal said that efforts are being made to ascertain his other previous involvements and search of his co-accused is also underway.
