Unseasonal rain makes Delhi traffic crawl

Delhi was caught off guard on Tuesday morning as heavy rain and hailstorm lashed the city. The weather department has forecast light to heavy rainfall in the region over the next two to three days, with the sun making an appearance only on Sunday.

The city shivered under chill as many parts of Delhi and National Capital Region received incessant rain and hail in the morning. Before the rain, thick cover of clouds covered Delhi, giving the impression of evening time. The sky remained cloudy afterwards too, with the maximum temperature plunging to 19 degrees Celsius, which was two degrees below normal. The minimum temperature, meanwhile, was recorded as 12.5 degrees Celsius, five notches above season's average. It is expected to settle at 8 degrees with wind speed touching 20-25kmph on Wednesday and Thursday. The weatherman has forecast the rain activity to continue till Saturday with no fog over the next couple of days. The weather will clear only on Sunday when it is expected to be bright and sunny.

Meanwhile, waterlogging due to heavy rains led to traffic jam at major intersections in the national capital, throwing life out of gear during morning rush hours. According to information provided by the Delhi Traffic Police on its official Twitter handle, smooth movement of traffic was disrupted at Karala Chowk, Malviya Nagar, Modi Mill flyover, and Azad Market underpass.Vehicles moved bumper-to-bumper on Narayana flyover and Defence Colony underpass (from Jangpura towards Lajpat Nagar) due to waterlogging.Commuters are expected to witness traffic congestions at Khyber Pass, Kela Ghat GPO, Chatta Rail, Digamber Jain Mandir near old Delhi railway station, Ashok Vihar flyover and Aurobindo Marg.Waterlogging caused vehicles to move cheek-by-jowl at Moolchand underpass, Bihari under railway bridge, Chhatrasal Stadium main gate red light, IP estate, Samalkha red light, RTR T-point, Bhairon Marg under railway bridge and Devli.The Delhi Traffic Police has advised commuters to avoid the stretch between Savitri Cinema and Ashram.
