An Uber cab driver has been arrested for allegedly picking up a woman from Delhi and raping her at an isolated stretch near his Ghaziabad house on July 6, the police said on Sunday.

Cops said it was difficult to crack the case because the survivor suffers from a medical condition that impairs her ability to recollect events. The crime again exposes that public transport remains unsafe for women in Delhi.

Jobless and facing domestic issues, the 38-year-old woman was at East Delhi's Karkardooma court when driver Kamal (45) noticed her, said the police.

With a promise to get her a job, he made her sit inside. The police said the woman, who lives in an East Delhi locality, did not book a ride but boarded the cab.

The accused, who lives in Ghaziabad's Gokuldham area, told the woman that his wife would arrange for a job. The police said he took her near his house and raped her. "The woman alleged that Kamal sodomised her. He also thrashed her and asked her to stay quiet. He dropped her back," the officer said. The woman reached East Delhi's Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where doctors noticed the sexual assault and informed the police.

"We have recorded her statement and lodged a case of kidnapping, rape, unnatural sex and wrongful confinement," the officer said.

The driver was arrested a day after the crime. Various areas in and around Delhi were searched and finally the accused was tracked down. He has been married twice and has four children.

This is not the first rape case involving an Uber driver. Early this month, the ride-hailing company had to fire a top executive for allegedly obtaining medical records of a 26-year-old woman raped by its driver in Delhi in 2014.
