The volte-face by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came in quick. Less than 24 hours after it publicly denounced the Congress party for having no moral authority to call nationwide bandh, its senior leaders were found sharing space with the Congress and other political counterparts on Monday.

Senior AAP leaders Sanjay Singh and Somnath Bharti rallied behind the bandh against the unprecedented rise of petrol and diesel prices. Singh, however, justified the seeming 'change of heart' as one for the cause of common man. "Everyone, cutting across party lines, should come together for such issues of national interest. The rise in petrol and diesel prices shows that the Modi government after its pakoda scheme, is coming out with katora (bowl) scheme," he said.

AAP leader Atishi protested at Jantar Mantar along with Left leader D Raja and Sitaram Yechury. Atishi said Prime Minister Modi should answer why inflation has increased manifolds.

The AAP said in a statement that all opposition parties must unite and force the Modi government to reverse its "anti-people policies which are solely responsible" for price rise, particularly the unprecedented rise in prices of petrol and diesel. "However, the Congress cannot be the umbrella under which all opposition parties are comfortable. Congress has to shun its big brother and unreasonable attitude towards other parties," it a said.No political party in India is "subservient" to Congress and it must bear this in mind.

On Sunday, AAP spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj had clear the party's stand of not throwing its weight behind Congress for the bandh. He had lashed out at the Congress saying while the issue was right, the party lacked the moral authority to call for a bandh over fuel hike. Without mincing words, he clearly said the AAP will not join the protest.
