Days ahead of Holi, the Special Cell of Delhi Police has arrested two persons, who had travelled from Kapurthala in Punjab to the national Capital to procure fine-quality heroin worth nearly Rs 10 crore. Brought from Afghanistan and Pakistan, the heroin was to be supplied in Punjab.

"Gurnaam Singh alias Giani and Dilbagh Singh alias Sonu were travelling in an i20 car. They were to take heroin from an African national, who has also been identified. We are trying to identify more persons to break the chain of this syndicate. The Cell team had arrested Dilbagh's father Balwinder Singh in July for possession of four kg heroin. He is, at present, in the jail," Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Cell, Sanjeev Yadav said.

The police also seized Rs 20 lakh from the possession of the duo. The Income-Tax (I-T) officials have been informed as well. The African nationals involved in supplying drugs to the duo are also involved in sending consignments to other countries, including England, France, Canada, and South Africa via courier. The families of the two arrested persons treat drug peddling as family business, cops said.

According to the police, fine-quality heroin is sold at a rate of Rs 4-5 crore per kg. Until March 9, the Special Cell had seized five kg heroin. The Northern Range of the Special Cell has been working over various drug syndicates active in states of Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Punjab.

Accordingly, various members of the cartel were identified and a close watch was kept on their movements. The team then received information that the two accused will be travelling to Delhi by road to procure the drug and supply it to others ahead of the elections and Holi.

"The duo has more people working under them and their customers vary from students to workers to corporates and politicians as well. The drug trail starts from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and reaches India," a senior police officer revealed.

Gurnaam and Dilbagh were arrested from Singhu border area, after they had procured the heroin and were travelling back to Punjab. They had carved out a cavity in the car bottom to hide the drug. The car was registered in Balwinder's name and had a fake Haryana number plate. "When the vehicle was being intercepted, the duo tried to mow the cops down. The police team then broke the side glass of the car, forcing them to stop," Yadav said.

Their interrogation revealed the identity of drug traffickers of African origin residing in the Dwarka area. The accused also revealed that these foreign nationals procured the heroin from Afghanistan and Pakistan. The carriers would consume insoluble capsules of heroin and then travel to India by air.
