A week after the sensational daylight robbery-cum-culpable homicide on May 30 at the house of a senior citizen in the Ajmal Khan Park neighborhood of Karol Bagh, the Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested two of the five accused near the New Delhi Railway Station. The robbers were identified as Vinay Kumar and Lilu Pal. The police also recovered a country-made pistol and two live cartridges from their possession.

According to the police, five men stormed into the house of a senior citizen named Avinash Chander Bhalla in the morning of May 30. The robbers tied Bhalla and his male servant with clothes and tapes before ransacking the house. His wife and daughter had gone out somewhere earlier in the morning.

Bhalla's maid, who arrived at the house a little later, had tried to raise an alarm about the incident and locked her inside the bathroom. She later jumped off through the window of the bathroom either out of fear or in an attempt to call for help from neighbours.

"When policemen reached the spot, they found the house ransacked and also a woman lying on the floor in a pool of blood. She was rushed to the Lady Hardinge Medical College but the doctors declared her brought dead", said a senior police official.

The robbers left after looting many valuables including a pair of gold earrings, two diamond rings, one mobile phone, one i-pod and cash worth Rs. 12,000/- from the house.

The police subsequently registered a case of robbery and culpable homicide at the Desh Bandhu Gupta Road Police Station and soon began the investigation. With the help of local intelligence, the investigating team zeroed in on the accused Kumar and Pal. Tracking their movements, the police finally arrested them on Wednesday night.

During sustained interrogation, the police found that Vinay Kumar is a resident of Shahdara in North East Delhi and Lilu Pal of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh. Both of them revealed that they had committed the robbery as they were in need of money. They were helped by a few other associates in the crime.

The police are now investigating further to arrest the other men accused in the incident.
