Two people died while another person was injured after a fire broke out at a residential building in the Kailash Nagar area near Shahadra. Fire officials said that the fire started at a jeans factory that was being run from the building illegally. Another fire broke out at a slum area near the Mansarovar Park Metro station, causing the Metro train service to be briefly put on halt.

The fire that claimed two lives was reported around midnight on Sunday. According to senior officials from the Delhi Fire Services, the fire broke out on the first and second floors of a building at 18A Kailash Nagar which houses a jeans factory in the residential building. The deceased were identified as Fezan (22) and Shahmat (30), both a natives of Shahajanpur in Uttar Pradesh.

“The fire was big and about 10 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The fire broke out on the first and second floors of the building. All the occupants had managed to exit the building in time, but during the search, two charred bodies were taken out from the second floor and were handed over to the police. They were rushed to a hospital where they were declared dead and their bodies were then sent for a post-mortem examination,” said Atul Garg, chief fire officer, DFS.

The police said that the third floor of the building that was gutted is a residential unit and is occupied by the owner Kishore Aggarwal (68) and his family. “The factory that was being run had no ‘No Objection Certificate’ from the fire department,” fire officials said.

The fire was reported around 11.58 pm and could be controlled only after an hour of struggle around 12.50 am. One person was also injured in the incident and was shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. He had sustained burn injuries on his shoulder, officials said. They also said that the building had a godown on the ground floor which had apparels stashed and that might have fuelled the fire.

DCP Shahadra, Nupur Prasad said that a case under IPC section 304A has been registered and efforts to identify the reason behind fire are being made.
