Two medical students were killed after they fell off the newly-constructed Signature Bridge after their sports bike rammed into a divider on Friday morning, police said.

The deceased have been identified as Satya Vijay Shankaran (23) who was doing an internship at Hindu Rao Hospital and Chandra Shekhar (21), a 2nd-year medical student of Hindu Rao Medical College, they added.

This is the first accident on the Signature Bridge since its inauguration by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on November 4.

Both were roommates at the hostel and had come for a joy ride when then the incident took place, police said.

"We received police control room (PCR) call around 8.40 am informing that there was an accident on left turn loop of the newly inaugurated Signature Bridge. A team was rushed to the spot. On reaching they found that two motorcycle riders were apparently driving at high speed and hit the divider following which the two fell down the bridge. The two riders fell approximately 40 feet down. The KTM bike was found on the bridge," said a senior police officer.

The two were coming from the northeast district and were probably heading towards Majnu Ka Tilla, the officer said.

Police said that both were rushed to a nearby hospital where they were declared brought dead by doctors. The two were not wearing helmets.

"The two were covered in blood when they brought to the hospital. Chandra Shekhar had his breaths running for 2 minutes but he died before he could even be treated. They had lost a lot of blood while reaching the hospital and had received multiple fractures in the brain and spine after falling from a height of 40 feet," said a senior hospital official.

Police informed the family members of the victims. Shekher's family who lives in the Khanpur area of South Delhi rushed to the hospital while Shankaran's family which lives in Ranchi were on their way.

Students from the medical college reached the hospital after hearing about the accident.

"The two were roommates and on Thursday morning they went on a joy ride as they always did on their off days. We got to know about the accident from the administration. We heard that they were speeding and the bike hit the divider but if they would have been riding at a high speed the bike would have got damaged after hitting the divider," said Umesh, a student.

He further added that the two deceased were very close friends. A case under IPC Section 279 (rash driving) and 304 A has been registered, police said.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. Further investigation is underway.
