Two persons died while 22 others were injured when an Uttar Pradesh State Roadways bus fell off the Yamuna Expressway in Dankaur area of Greater Noida in the wee hours of Sunday. Police suspect that the driver might have dozed off after which the bus hit the divider and fell into the underpass area.

The deceased have been identified as Ram Kishan (47), Sagar Sharma (21).

"We received a PCR call around 4:15 am about the incident and the police rescued the passengers after which they were rushed to hospital," said a senior police official of Dankaur Police station.

"The bus driver suffered severe head injuries and is on ventilator support. While people sitting in the front seats received serious injuries. Some have been discharged after first aid while others are undergoing treatment," said BK Sharma, officer on duty at Kailash Hospital.

Narrating the ordeal, one of the passengers Laxmi Devi (38), a resident of Greater Noida said that she along with her son and a relative were returning home and most of the passengers were sleeping in the bus.

"All of a sudden, I felt a massive jolt and the bus hit the right side of the wall and fell on the ground from a height of about 20 feet. I fell unconscious and woke up at the hospital. My son has received head injuries while I survived with a hand fracture and bruises," said Devi.

Family members of victims alleged that the hospital authorities misbehaved and instead of providing first aid to the victims, they refused to admit the injured until fee was paid. Family members also demanded that the government should provide compensation or take the medical bill responsibility of the victims.

However, the hospital denied the allegations and said the first aid had been given as soon as the patients arrived.

Sukhbeer, the bus conductor said the exact cause of the accident can't be determined as the driver had crossed the toll just 5 minutes ago and was not over-speeding.
