Two minors aged 12 and 14 drowned in the Agra Canal near Lohia Pul in southeast Delhi's Aali village area on Wednesday morning while trying to get a ball which had fallen in the water. Bodies of the two children were pulled out following rescue and search operations that lasted a couple of hours.
The two deceased were identified as Vishesh (12) and Abhishek (14), both residents of the Bilaspur Camp area in Badarpur.
According to the police, it was around 11 am on Wednesday when a passerby saw two kids struggling to come out of the water after they had fallen in the canal. The man immediately alerted the police after which PCR vans, emergency response vehicles, CATS ambulances, fire tenders, along with local police staff and rescuers from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority were rushed to the spot.
"Since the kids could not be seen in the canal, divers and motor boats were called in to search for the bodies. Following at least two hours of search, the two bodies were recovered from deep waters. While Vishesh was rescued by the boat club team around 11:50 am, Abhishek's remains were pulled out at 12:45 pm. The bodies were handed over to the Delhi Police and were taken for post-mortem examination," a senior police officer said.
The police said that locals and witnesses told them that the two children were playing near the canal when their ball fell into the water. It was while trying to take the ball out of the water that the two kids leaned towards the canal and fell into it. "CCTV footages from the area are also being checked to ascertain the sequence of the event," the police said.
