The Crime Branch of Delhi Police has detained two persons for carrying Rs 27 lakh in new Rs 2,000 notes on Thursday. The duo, travelling from Mumbai to Delhi, is suspected to be a part of a large syndicate involving bank officials and hawala traders.
So far, nearly Rs1.5 crore in new currency notes has been brought from Mumbai to Delhi, sources said.
The police are now investigating how the two managed to get such a large amount of money in new currency when the maximum withdrawal limit is Rs 24,000 per week through a cheque and Rs 2,000 daily from an ATM.
"Ajit Pal Singh, 41, and Rajender Singh, 51, had come from Mumbai by Sampark Kranti and had got down at the Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station,"said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.
Sources said they suspected it to be a large syndicate and that exchange of currency in such large amounts was going on in an uncontrolled manner in Mumbai. The two were apprehended while they were sitting in a Fortuner car near the station. They told the investigators that they had gone to Mumbai to collect the cash on behalf of a person identified as Sanjay Malik, who owns a pharmaceutical industry in Baddi. On earlier occasions, Malik has exchanged his old notes and has even taken commission from others to exchange their notes. He is absconding. Ajit also owns a firm called Medikos, which is his only source of income.
"It's a chain of agents and sub-agents, who deal in new currency and gold. Malik's arrest would likely reveal the chain and the people who worked under him,"said a senior police officer.
At present, the Income Tax officials and the intelligence sleuths are jointly interrogating the accused.
