Two held by Delhi police for duping people on mobile dating app

The duo, identified as 26-year-old Chiranjeev and his 19-year-old female accomplice, Poonam (name changed) would invite customers for the purpose of friendship or provide escorts.

The Delhi police have arrested two people who were involved in a scam where fake identities were on a mobile dating app for soliciting prospective customers. The duo, identified as 26-year-old Chiranjeev and his 19-year-old female accomplice, Poonam (name changed) would invite customers for the purpose of friendship or provide escorts.

The case was first registered by a female complainant who got to know from a friend that her photographs are being used on a mobile dating app called 'Happen' without her knowledge or permission. 

She checked the app for herself and found that the account associated with her picture was being used for soliciting people for friendship. She contacted the alleged person who used her picture for the fake account through WhatsApp and phone calls, but the person refused to take them down and threatened her by saying that they wouldn't take down the pictures no matter what she does. A case was filled in the Amar Colony Police station.

The accused's bank details and address were found after analysing their mobile wallet accounts. However, the addresses found were found to be fake. During further investigation, it was revealed that actual name of the accused is Chiranjeev, who was operating with a forged account and mobile SIMs procured through fake identities. Chiranjeev was arrested with the help of analysis of different mobiles and was subsequently identified by witnesses. On the instance of Chiranjeev, Poonam too was arrested.

Chiranjeevi had met Poonam eight-ten months prior to the arrest. They both used to meet in a park near DC Chowk, Rohini and from where they used to make calls to their targets and induced them to transfer money.

They used to ask for ask for small amounts of money as such Rs 500 or Rs 1,000 for sharing nude pictures or videos. They never used to send anything in return and were confident that no one would complain about them because of the meager amount charged and fearing social stigma. The accused have been charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal code and further investigation into the case is underway.
