Two Delhi Police officers were conferred with the 'Asadharan Karya Puraskar' for showing exemplary courage while nabbing criminals despite being grievously injured by them. Commissioner of Police, Amulya Patnaik also rewarded the two officers with out-of-turn promotion besides the award.

Head Constable Narender Kumar and Assistant Sub-Inspector Naresh Kumar posted at the Punjabi Bagh police station were on anti-robbery patrolling on Rohtak Road, Rampura. The two were also asked to work on probable leads in connection with a murder case.

While the cops were patrolling the area on March 6 around 10 pm, they spotted a group of five people walking ahead of their vehicle in a suspicious manner near the Rampura Road. The duo stopped them and questioned them.

"The group got infuriated and turned violent. One of them pushed Naresh and the three others started running while calling out the fifth man, who was later identified as Mansoor. While running they even asked Mansoor to take out his knife. Naresh ran behind them while Mansoor stabbed Narender twice on his forehead and shoulder," said Vijay Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, West.

While Naresh was running behind the criminals, he heard the screams of Narendra who was bleeding and yet had caught hold of the accused. They both then overpowered him.

Narendra and Naresh were rushed to the hospital. A case was later registered and during the course of the investigation, the remaining persons identified as Dildara alias Naseeb, Praveen alias Lala, Pintu alias PK and Rizwan alias Chela were arrested by the police.

The accused persons disclosed that they were earlier involved in many cases of robbery, theft, attempt to murder, burglary, house theft and attempt to culpable homicide among others. One of the apprehended juvenile, who is an associate of Mansoor, is wanted in a robbery case. All the accused persons are drug users and another case under appropriate sections was also registered against them.

"The two cops have maintained a track record of consistently doing work with sheer professionalism and unwavering devotion to duty. Their previous record is equally commendable and has been continuously appreciated. They have set an example of the gallant deeds and dedication," said Kumar.
