In an alleged case of gang war, two men were shot dead by assailants late on Wednesday evening in North-East Delhi's Jafrabad area.

Police sources said that while a case has been registered, more than 12 empty cartridges have also been recovered from the spot, hinting at a possible case of old enmity.

"We have identified the accused and all of them have a previous criminal record. The men are absconding and several teams have been formed to arrest them," said a police official.

Eyewitnesses said that the incident took place around 11 pm on Wednesday. They added that they ran and hid as soon as they heard the gun shots.

"Initially there was a loud altercation, but the locals didn't pay much heed to it. However soon, the men took out guns and began shooting at each other. While one of the men received a gun wound and immediately lay unconscious, the other man too fell after a couple of rounds of gun shots," said a local shopkeeper.

Initial investigation has revealed the victims as Imran and Mohammed Qumqr.

"Imran had already succumbed to injuries by the time police reached the spot, whereas Qumqr was declared brought dead at the hospital," said a senior police official.

He added that while the victims have been identified as members of the Cheenu gang, which has been trying to make its presence felt in the locality, they were fired upon by members of Hashim Baba gang members.
