The family of a 52-year-old woman, who went missing from the AIIMS premises on Tuesday, had to look for her on their own after the police turned them away. The woman, Rashmi Rekha Acharya, was fortunately found just a day later near the Deer Park in Hauz Khas, south Delhi, but the incident has once again brought to the fore the apathy of cops in the Capital.

Rashmi and her husband had come to Delhi for her treatment after the recurrence of a brain tumour. The neurosurgeon informed the couple that the formalities will be completed on Thursday. Rashmi then waited on the ground floor while her husband went to the seventh floor to take care of some work.

Sushree Acharya, Rashmi's niece, said: "When he returned at 4.45pm, he could not find her anywhere. He then informed me. We went to the Hauz Khas police station but the officers were of no help. They did not even ask my uncle for her photograph. So, we started searching for her on our own."

What's more, the police did not even give them a copy of the FIR. "The Delhi Police acted only after the Orissa SP intervened as we had asked for his help. My aunt doesn't remember anything. She told us that she was talking to someone while she was sitting and then she was in an auto with a woman and a man. I think she must have been given sedatives," Sushree said.

The family members also claimed that after their visit to the police station, they made a PCR call and showed the officers her photographs but they showed no interest. "In the morning, we received a call from a passerby, who informed us that she remembered her husband's number, and was in front of the Deer Park in Hauz Khas," Sushree added.

The family's ordeal did not end just there. When they rushed Rashmi to AIIMS, as she had a wound on her head, the hospital authorities denied her treatment, stating that it was an accident case and that she should be taken to the Trauma Centre. Furthermore, the discharge papers given after a three-hour wait at the Trauma Centre had someone else's name on them," the family alleged.

Speaking about the issue, AIIMS Spokesperson Amit Gupta said: "We have a standard procedure if someone goes missing from the hospital. The Medical Superintendent needs to be informed and then the remaining procedure is carried out. The woman had a complicated case as she is a brain tumour patient. The standard procedure is that if a patient is brought to AIIMS with injuries, they are given primary treatment and then referred to the trauma centre. If any deviation has taken place, proper investigation will be done."
