Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has landed himself in yet another controversy over his letter to Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Anil Baijal over the capital's traffic issue.

Kejriwal's claims that he had not been informed about the work done by the government on resolving traffic bottlenecks has been denied by the LG's office.

On July 6, he had written a letter to the LG stating that he was unaware of Baijal working with bureaucrats to address the traffic issue.

Responding to the news of Kejriwal's missive, a senior official from the LG's office said, "A lot of work has been done in the last six months, and many of his ministers attended meetings on it, too. It is surprising that the Chief Minister did not have any knowledge of the issue."

In the letter received by the LG, the CM assured his complete cooperation in the resolution of the traffic issue, but stated that he and his ministers had no knowledge of this entire matter.

An excerpt from the letter reads, "I was pleasantly surprised to read your letter in which you have said that you have formed six task force units to work on improving the traffic situation in Delhi, which has been working for the past few months. You have written that they have also completed a significant amount of work. Neither I nor my ministers had any information about this. If we did, we would not have given directions separately to the transport commissioner. The people of Delhi are fed up with the traffic situation and I am extremely happy that you have started working in this direction along with officers."

In response, the LG's office has issued an official statement. "The government was not kept in the dark. The minutes of the very first meeting the LG chaired to review the submissions of the six task forces on March 28, 2017 were sent to the secretary to the Transport minister."

An official said, "The Minister (UD/PWD) had also attended and given many useful inputs during a meeting to discuss two pilot corridors — Corridor No 1 (Aurobindo Marg to Andheria More) and Corridor No 3 (Chirag Delhi Crossing to Savitri Flyover)."

...& ANALYSIS

  • The traffic issue once highlights the uncomfortable relationship between the CM and LG which ensures that the AAP government is likely to struggle with proposed reforms in the coming months

  • The fact that a CM can say that he was not informed, portrays a bad image and suggests that he has not fully in charge or control of what is going on
