Sealing of shops in Delhi became an important issue at the Bharat Bandh observed by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) at Jantar Mantar here on Friday. Businessmen affected by the sealing drive started by Supreme Court appointed monitoring committee last year reached the premises to garner support from fellow traders. The CAIT was called against Walmart's acquisition of retail major player Flipkart and FDI in the retail sector. The nationwide shutdown which was supposed to be observed in every corner of the country otherwise saw lukewarm response across the national capital.

Members of Defence Colony Market Traders' Association and businessmen from the market, Greater Kailash N Block and Meher Chand Market were also present at Jantar Mantar to protest against the sealing drive. In a bid to seek support from an umbrella body, they said the sealing drive has completely ruined their business. "We have come on roads literally, forced to run our households on loan from banks and relatives. The government is so callous that they have not bothered to bring in either the ordinance or to acknowledge the provisions in Master Plan 2021," said Amit Jindal, a businessman from Defence Colony

Meanwhile, Delhi's prime market places like Sarojni nagar, Lajpat's Central Market and Laxmi nagar saw usual foot fall, most of the shops in these places remained opened denying the Bharat Bandh called by the traders association.

In Lajpat Nagar, While their were just few shops closed most of the traders said they were not even aware that such a bandh was announced by the traders association. "We did not knew about who had called the strike and even if the strike was called, so how can we contribute to the protest,"said Vinayak who runs a garments shop in the market.

However the market association of Lajpat Nagar Traders argued that even though the strike was called, but the traders in the market decided to keep shutters down only till 1'o clock in the noon. "Yes, the strike was called and most of us contributed our bit to the protest which was for our own good. But the traders decided to open their shops after 1'o clock in the noon,"V.K. Gupta, vice president of Lajpat Nagar Traders association

Apart from Lajpat Nagar, markets like Sarojni Nagar also welcomed customers, rendering the bandh a lukewarm success. "I did not know some Bharat Bandh was called today. I got to know from someone in Metro. Upon reaching at the market, I was relieved as no shop was closed,"said Anjali who was shopping in Sarojini Nagar for her birthday .
