Pragati Maidan's makeover to become a world class convention centre is good news, but the work has already cast its shadow on one of its best known outing, the India International Trade Fair (IITF) which is to be held from November 14 to November 27.

The India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) which has undertaken redevelopment work of Pragati Maidan, has decreased the area where the exhibition is to be put up, by half, because of ongoing construction in the premises.

As opposed to the 1 lakh sq metres of space allotted to IITF every year, participants will have to make do with 50,000 sq metres this time.

The 'renovation' of the complex has also led to the ITPO devise a new system of ticket distribution to handle the burgeoning crowd that throngs the trade fair. According to sources, this year, ITPO will sell tickets on first come, first serve basis.

This means that once the capacity to accommodate visitors reaches its optimum limit, sale of tickets will be stopped.

"It would be difficult to contain such a large number of people given that the space has come down to half because of construction of Integrated Exhibition cum Convention Centre(IECC) by ITPO.

We will have to limit the number of visitors this year and the first come first serve system has been mooted to address this issue," a senior ITPO official said.

The official added that to ensure maximum footfall by visitors, ITPO has also reduced business days to four instead of five days which has been the regular practice.

Meanwhile, the new convention centre called the Integrated Exhibtion Cum Convention centre (IECC) conceived by National Buildings Construction Corporation (India) Limited, will be constructed at a cost of Rs 2,254 crore.

While completion of the convention centre is targeted for December 2018, the entire structure, including seven new exhibition halls, will be completed by July 2019.
