Investigation into the modus operandi of the family of dacoits has revealed that the eight sons of the 62-year-old female don, Basiran, would create makeshift houses on trees in order to evade arrest every time the police came searching for them.

Basiran would visit them at night to give them food. The family used the forest area to their advantage as it was a huge area allowing them to shift from one spot to another.

Shamim alias Gunga, the eldest son of the family, has 42 cases of robbery, dacoity, snatching and kidnapping against him, the most among the brothers.

The juvenile — who is yet to establish the mark of a criminal — had been assisting his brothers and was involved snatching. Of the eight sons, three are currently lodged in jail.

Every time the police came to search for the remaining sons, they would run away to the jungle area and scatter themselves. For their survival, they would make a makeshift shanty on a trees and would dismantle the same and change their base upon knowing the police is searching for them.

"The jungle area is huge and they would hide in random places making it difficult for the police. One of them is absconding after he was released on bail and so are the remaining brothers. Teams have been formed to nab them," said a police officer.

Basiran was born in Agra and married Malkhan, a resident of Dholpur area in Rajasthan. According to the husband, he could not keep her wife away from the criminal world and let her be on her own. Besides the eight sons, the couple also has four daughters, who also decided to stay away from the criminal world as well.

"A team led by inspector Upender Singh, SHO of Sangam Vihar developed inputs about Basiran. The police had been chasing her for the last eight months. She has even applied for anticipatory bail and wanted her sealed house to be released however her criminal background and objection by the Delhi police, the applications were dismissed," said Romil Baaniya, DCP, South.
