The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) intervened in the case of the recent suicide of a 17-year-old girl who hanged herself in the Tilak Vihar Police station on Sunday. Following all media reports regarding the case, the Commission declared that it raised a serious issue of violation of human rights and indicated the gross negligence of the police officials.

NHRC has issued a notice to the Commissioner of Police asking for the detailed report regarding this matter which includes the inquiry and investigation along with the postmortem report which will determine the cause of death. These reports are expected to be delivered within a matter of six weeks. The commission also questioned the police about the absence of women police officials at the post.

Brothers of the victim, who were locked up in another room, claimed that the girl's feet were touching the ground and therefore believe that she could not have died because of hanging. Members of her family along with other residents said that the girl was under pressure since her neighbour wanted to marry her and there was some sort of tension going on between the two families constantly. The oldest daughter of the victim's family was married into the culprit's family and thus they never involved the police before.

The girl had approached police at 2 am on Sunday and informed them that she did not want to go back home because of the disputes between the two families, but instead of assisting the girl she was sent to a room, where she committed suicide by hanging, from where she was going to be sent to a Nari Niketan.

No women officials were present at the post. Seeing that she hanged herself, police officials panicked and hid in different rooms. An investigation has been initiated to investigate the matter.
