The Special Cell of Delhi Police has arrested three persons, including the kingpin of a drug cartel and recovered heroin worth Rs 20 crore. The high-grade heroin was cultivated in the north-eastern region of the country and was sold in crude as well as fine forms in international markets.

"Ram Nath (26), Virender Pal Singh (29) and Parvej Khan (64), all residents of Budaun in Uttar Pradesh, all traded in the drug. Five kg of high-grade heroin worth Rs 20 crore have been recovered from them. We have also recovered several mobile phones, SIM cards and a car which was used for trafficking drugs," Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, deputy commissioner of police, special cell said.

Yadav further stated that the cell had been working on various modules involved in drug trafficking and have recovered around 50 kg of heroin, so far. "They procured the drug from suppliers in West Bengal and Manipur. Opium is cultivated and processed in the Naxal-hit areas of West Bengal and also the hilly regions. The drug is later transported to Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand through carriers," Yadav said.

On February 13, the police got a tip-off about the movements of Nath and Singh. They were informed that the duo would come to the south-east area of the Capital in a car. The car was intercepted and four kg of heroin were seized. The duo disclosed that Khan, who was the kingpin of the gang, was in Budaun. Khan was arrested on February 17 from his village and one kg of heroin was recovered from him.

Nath, who was financially weak and had four siblings to look after, got into the drug trafficking business after being lured into it by Singh, who was already involved in the trade, he told interrogators. They have been collectively peddling the drug for the last two years.

Nath would visit the Malda-Farraka region in West Bengal to procure drugs from Malda-based Khan and Nizam. Khan and Nizam are famous in the drug business.

Khan is also a drug peddler in Badaun. He had been previously charged for his involvement in various crimes, including cases under sections of the Uttar Pradesh Control Of Goondas Act, 1970 and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
