Three arrested by Delhi Police for cheating ACP of online fraud

The members of the gang have cheated large sums of money from numerous persons across different states.

The Shahadra district of Delhi Police have arrested three people and claimed to have busted an online cheating syndicate from Uttar Pradesh border on Sunday. Police said that the three had cheated a Crime Branch officer of Delhi Police by posing as an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).

The modus operandi the trio used to dupe victim was by accessing their personal details from social media. According to the police, the accused have been identified as, Yousaf (24), Sakir (27) and Ravi (22) all residents of Mathura, Uttar Pradesh.

The complainant who is an inspector in Crime Branch alleged that in May he received a call, wherein the caller posed as an ACP and said that he lost his wallet and is in need of money as his relative is admitted in hospital. The caller requested him to send money into a Paytm wallet. Victim transferred Rs 20,000 into the Paytm wallet.

However when the complainant met, the ACP, he denied calling him for the same after which he felt cheated and filed a case.

Being a cyber fraud the case was transferred to Cyber Cell of Shahdara District and technical investigation was initiated, further details against the alleged Paytm wallet was obtained from the Paytm merchant, said Deputy commissioner of police (Shahadra) Meghna Yadav.

Later details were also acquired from the bank and call data records were also obtained. After getting the credible information the accused were arrested who were operating from the border area of UP and Rajasthan.

Fake Call

  • Crime Branch officer said in May he received a call from an accused  who identified himself as a ACP. 
  • The fake ACP said he was in need of urgent money, which he wanted it to be transferred in his Paytm account
