Raising big questions about the efficacy of the self-proclaimed 'tech-savvy' UP Police, a youth not only snatched the phone of an automobile company employee, but has also evaded arrest since June 12 even after a selfie he took with the stolen phone was uploaded on the victim's Google Drive account. Not only that, the victim gave the cops the last location of the accused using the GPS on the phone but to no avail.

In fact, the victim, Manoj Sharma, a resident of Khanpur in Delhi, nabbed two of the accused himself. A cyber crime research and investigation centre, which cost crores of rupees, was thrown open in Sector 6 of Noida recently.

Recalling the incident, Sharma said: "As soon as I reached near my car around 4pm, three bike-borne assailants snatched my phone and made away. With the help of another biker, I chased them. I managed to nab them at a traffic signal near the Noida stadium. One of them managed to flee with my phone." He had bought the phone just 10 days ago.

The two accused were identified as Lucky Singh and Sachin Singh. "I had to make rounds of police stations with the two accused. I finally got free at midnight after an FIR was lodged at the Sector 20 police station," Sharma said, adding that when he went to the police station the next day, the cops told him that the two criminals had been sent to jail. They gave no more details.

Sharma was in for more shock after a few days. "When I synchronised my phone's photo gallery with the Google Drive, the criminal's selfie got uploaded on my account. The photos were taken on June 15. The criminal is still using my phone," Sharma said.

The last location of the accused was Khoda in Ghaziabad.

Noida Superintendent of Police Arun Kumar Singh said the matter has been shared with the cyber cell. "The phone has been put on surveillance," he said.
