Thespians to take centrestage at theatre festival

The festival will host three plays in English and Hindi, as well as panel discussions and theatre workshops.

The Delhi Theatre Festival, which debuts in the capital next weekend, is set to enthral theatre lovers with power-packed performances by an impressive cast, at Siri Fort Auditorium. Starting from April 29, the two-day event will see thespians like Naseeruddin Shah, Saurabh Shukla, Shekhar Suman, Rajit Kapur, among others.

The festival will host three plays in English and Hindi, as well as panel discussions and theatre workshops. The audience will be treated to A Walk In The Woods by the famous Motley Group that has Shah at the helm, on the opening day. Backed by two versatile actors, Shah and Kapur, the play is an Indian adaptation of Lee Blessing's original play.

While Blessing's version centred around the Cold War, and turned the spotlight on the usual friendship between a US arms negotiator and his Russian counterpart. In this play directed by Ratna Pathak Shah, her husband is the suave, charming Jamaludin Lutfullah, a Pakistani diplomat who has a way with words, and is cynical and bitter about some lessons learnt and not learnt from history.

On the second day, Barff directed by National Award-winning actor Saurabh Shukla, who also plays a key role in the drama, will trace the lives of three protagonists on a cold, wintry night.

Another Hindi play, Ek Mulaqat will play out the love story between two literary geniuses, Sahir Ludhianvi and Amrita Pritam. Veteran actors Deepti Naval and Suman will play the title roles of the play,
