The women's wing of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee made a visit to Mahila Dakshata Samiti's Snehalaya, a government shelter home for women at Karkardooma in east Delhi and made a shocking revelation that "terribly wrong" things were happening in the shelter home.

Delhi Pradesh Mahila Congress president Sharmistha Mukherjee, who is also the chief spokesperson of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, lodged a complaint at the Anand Vihar police station on the issue, and sought immediate and strong action after registering the FIR.

According to the party's women wing, one of the inmates they spoke to at the shelter home disclosed that outsiders frequented the place to do "wrong things" and they were often beaten up and denied food by the shelter home keepers.

"Educated women with children reside at the shelter home, but they are beaten up and denied food quite regularly there," she said while addressing a press conference.

Mukherjee also demanded that the Delhi government conduct a social audit of the women's shelter homes by a neutral agency to find out the truth. She said further action by the Delhi Pradesh Mahila Congress will depend on police action taken on their complaint against Snehalaya.

She said the Delhi Women Congress volunteers approached seven shelter homes in Delhi on the pretext that they wanted to distribute sweets and fruits to the inmates of these shelter homes, and got entry to three of them. She said the conditions at All India Women's Conference Shelter Home at Bhagwan Das Road and Prayas were "Okay" while things were "terribly wrong" at Snehalaya.
