It has been hard for 16-year-old Sunita (name changed), to recover from the agony and brutality that she experienced over the last few months. From being repeatedly raped by a man who she considered her 'brother' to be kidnapped and dumped in a dark room in Kapoorthala, Punjab for a week where the sexual abuse continued, the teenage girl who was rescued is now four months pregnant—bearing the child of her rapist.

Her family, too, fears that their daughter might not be able to lead a normal life. They say that it has become hard for them to believe that Sunita lived normally like the other kids of her age, before she was abducted from her school in Shahadra and was raped multiple times in Kapoorthala. The accused had planned the kidnapping when she told him that she was pregnant.

On January 23, Sunita was asked by the accused to meet him after the school. The girl, who usually heads straight home from her school, stood near her school gate until Surjeet arrived. He asked her to come along, after which Sunita barely remembers what happened. To her horror, the 16-year-old woke up in Kapoorthala, the next day, locked up in a dark room.

The girl's parents got a missing person's report filed and the police started investigations.

DCP Shahdra, Nupur Prasad said that after scanning the numbers of more than two dozen possible suspects on her mobile phone, which she had left at home, they zeroed in on the accused, whom the girl's family had introduced as a close family friend. "On getting his location and other details we despatched a team and his hideout in Punjab was raided. It was late evening on Sunday that we were able to nab him and the girl was rescued," Prasad said.

After questioning the girl, the victim disclosed that she was raped and assaulted by the man. "Her medical examination disclosed that she was pregnant. During questioning, the girl also disclosed the fact the man had been serially assaulting her for past few months and had threatened to kill her, and her family members, if she revealed the matter to anyone."

"After she realised that she was pregnant she told the man who asked her to meet him at her school, promising that he would sort out the matter. From there he forcefully took her to Kapoorthala where he continued to rape her," police said.

The victim's family told police that she has hardly been able to overcome the traumatic experience of past seven days.

Surjeet has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on kidnapping and rape charges. Counselling has now been arranged for the girl.
