A 17-year-old youth was killed after being hit by a train near the Welcome area in east Delhi on Monday evening. Police said the youth was allegedly walking close to the track with earphones plugged in and could not hear the approaching train. His family, however, suspects foul play, the police said.

On the day of the incident, the teenager, identified as Arbaz, a student of Class XII, had left his house with a few friends. After about half an hour, his family received information that he has died in an accident, the police said."Primary investigation revealed that the boy was walking with earphones in and did not realise how close he was to the railway track. Initial questioning also suggested that the boy had left with a camera, but we did not find any camera near the body. A crime and forensics team also visited the spot and the matter is being probed from all possible angles. The family is suspecting foul play," a senior police officer said.

The officer further said that they are trying to identify Arbaz's friends with whom he had left the house minutes before the incident. Post-mortem reports are awaited to ascertain the cause of death, he said.

This, however, is not the only incident where people have fallen victim to such accidents while walking with earphones plugged in.

In June this year, a Mumbai girl miraculously escaped death after being hit by a train while she was crossing a railway line and listening to music at the Bhandup railway station. A goods train ran over her. The victim, however, survived with just minor injuries.

Last year in October, a software engineer was killed after being run over by a train near Gangolli in Mangaluru, while he was listening to music and could not hear the approaching train. The 23-year-old man was hit by the train from behind, that left him dead on the spot. In November 2014, a man was crushed to death by a train when he was crossing the tracks with earphones plugged in, near east Delhi's Mandawali area. In 2012, a 16-year-old first-year college student was crushed to death in a similar way in Mumbai.
