Private taxis, low-floor Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses and cluster buses continue to be the culprits on road, flouting traffic rules and contributing to over 30 per cent of the road accidents in the Capital, according to a data by the Delhi Traffic Police for 2016.

The annual data shows that these vehicles were the highest to be prosecuted for offences such as rash and negligent driving and over speeding.

In 2016, a total of 2,06,744 taxis were prosecuted by the police while in 2015, 1,19,992 taxis were issued challans for the same.

According to officials, some of these taxis are also run as commercial vehicles for ferrying school children.

"One of the major problems with these vehicles is that they flout the number of children allowed to be carried in a vehicle, which often result in being overburdened and cause accidents," a senior traffic police official said.

Three-tyred Gramin Sewas (goods carriers) are other offending vehicles causing collisions and often turning turtle.

According to the report, in 2016, 1,548 fatal accidents took place in which 1,591 persons were killed while in 2015, 1,582 fatal accidents occurred if which 1,622 persons were killed.

"This year we plan on even stricter enforcement to make a deterrent as well as seizing driving licenses so that the offences are not repeated," the officer added.
