South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has intensified its activities related to sanitation and other ancillary activities during first 9 days of ongoing Swachhata Hi Sewa fortnight. The concerted efforts under the activities have started showing positive results.

SDMC made functional sanitary vending machines at 14 toilets situated in various markets. Out of these 14 toilets, 3 are pink toilets dedicated to the women commissioned earlier and rest 11 toilets are partially being gradually converted into pink toilets. The 11 toilets are being painted pink in order to give them a specific identification. The sanitary napkins will be easily available at a subsidised rate of Rs 5 from the vending machines. The toilets are also being provided with incinerator machines for the decimation of the used napkins which was felt necessary to ensure cleanliness in and around the toilets.

The pink toilets were initially developed with an aim to provide a safe public convenience for the women by providing within it separate feeding and changing area. SDMC has also made an adequate arrangement of security, safety, electricity and water supply apart from proper maintenance of the fixtures. The pink toilets are presently functional at PVR Vikaspuri, Lajpat Nagar and GK Part 1.

SDMC has waged an all-out war against plastic bags since these are hazardous and dangerous for the human being, animals and environment. A drive to weed out plastic bags is on in all four zones under SDMC. All the staff concerned in the zones have pulled up their socks and hence been successful in seizing a substantial quantity of the plastic bags. During the first 9 days around 700 kg of plastic bags has been seized.
