Summer breaks are looked forward to by everyone with equal enthusiasm - schoolgoing children, college students and working professionals alike. The Police Families Welfare Society, in an attempt to make this summer a memorable one, organised a summer camp for ten adopted police colonies for the first time apart from the ten welfare centres from May 21.

A systematic survey of the areas (Civil Lines, Sarai Rohilla, Ashok Vihar, Rohini Sector 11, Paschim Vihar, Tilak Nagar, Andrewj Ganj, Model Town, Narela, Kaushambi and Mehram Nagar) helped the society to organise a range of interesting activities for different target groups.

According to the report, nearly 85 prominent personalities shared their expertise with the families of police personnel.

Nine dramatists from “Sangeet Natak” Academy and 10 dancers and nine musicians from “Tansen Academy” organised drama and dance classes. Other activities included counselling sessions, English speaking classes followed by training in culinary skills from “Excuse Me Bose Cafe”.

Other workshops such as grooming classes, public speaking, self-defence, rangoli, Vedic Maths and Zumba classes were an enriching experience for the children.

Another major contribution by the society in the camp was sports training for aspiring girls and boys in five disciplines — kabaddi, basketball, football, wrestling and badminton. The expertise of the coaches of the Delhi Police sports team was put to use to impart training and monitor the physical activities.

The best part of the camp was that imparting the skills was followed by a screening test of players to check their performance to identify their potential. A total of 40, 27 and 24 boys and girls in each discipline were identified in three different categories as A, B, C in order of their potentiality/competency.

Suchana Patnaik, President of Police Families Welfare Society formally closed the summer camp on June 9.
