A 13-year-old girl was denied admission at a renowned school in East Delhi as she is bald. Anshita Gupta suffers from alopecia that results in the shedding of hair and has been undergoing treatment since the age of 3.

The parents claim that the Vice-Principal of Vanstahali Public School told them that Anshita could be mocked by other students, hampering the discipline of the school and distracting teachers. The girl had cleared the entrance exam of the school and was eligible for the admission.

Speaking to DNA, Anshita's mother Shailesh Gupta said: "Why should her physical appearance matter to study in a school? We told the Vice-Principal that if the school and teachers support her, there will be no problem. We are always ready to help." Shailesh claims that when she reached the school along with her daughter, she was refused admission.

Principal of the school Anuradha Jain said: "We love girls. Whatever seats we have, we will accommodate the students." Rajiv Jain, Vice-Principal of the school, denied that he refused admission to the student.

"As and when students in the current Class IX would take TC (Transfer Certificate), depending on that, we will accommodate new students. We did not refuse the admission," said Jain.

She appeared for the entrance exam on February 23 and cleared it as well. The family members were later told to bring the child to the school and finish the formalities but when the mother met Rajeev, he told them that they should bring back their ward after her hair grows, the family claimed.

The girl's family claim that the school authorities had earlier quoted Rs 90,000 as the total amount that need to be paid. Mansi Gupta, Anshita's elder sister, alleged that the school authorities said: "Jab baal aa jayenege, tab le aaiyega (When the hair grows, we will take her). Jain said that other children would make fun of her which will hamper teaching". She further added that they had even said that the school's discipline will be affected.

"Her being bald has nothing to do with discipline. My sister is good at sports, academics and even other co-curricular activities," she said

Anshita studied at Bharat Bharti Public School till class 8 as the school is up to that class only. She scored 77 per cent in her final exams. The family members later applied to Vanasthali Public School, which is adjacent to the previous school in Mayur Vihar, Phase-3.

"We have never faced any problem ever. She has been studying earlier too and no one has ever mocked or made fun at the school," said Mansi.
