Hundreds of students of the Ansal University in Gurugram protested against the unavailability of basic facilities on the campus on Tuesday. As many as 5 people, including four students and a former graduate, also declared a fast unto death.

The private institute authorities have faced such a protest for the first time. Hundreds of students enrolled for different courses protested outside the Management Block of the varsity. According to the protesting students, most departments at the varsity were providing fake degrees, and their graduation certificates had no credibility.

"They have fooled innocent students. Forget facilities, we do not even have enough faculty members to teach us. Our teachers do not have post graduate degrees themselves," said Anil Kumar, a BTech Civil Engineering student.

"It's all fake. They don't provide a playground to us. It is rented out for corporate events," BBA student Ritesh Yadav alleged. "Other than the tuition fee, we have been asked to pay Rs 50,000 annually in the name of development fee. Ironically, there is not even a single drinking water tap with a filter in the campus," student Hemant Tanvar said.

Students further claimed that the four year BTech course, along with the hostel facility, cost them more than Rs 10 lakh, and many students are reeling under loans.

Protesters, who burned the prospectus of the university after calling it a big hoax, demanded a proper library and sports equipment, along with better hostel facilities. According to students, some protesters went to the staff room to urge the faculty members and the management to meet their demands but they were asked to wait and then were locked up inside a room for several hours.

"We wanted to talk to the teachers and management regarding the state of education here. Instead, they locked us in a room and called our parents," said former student Amit Nagar, who was leading the protest.

The university officials, however, denied the allegations. "It is us who wanted to talk to the students. We even requested them to come and talk, but they did not listen. How can we lock up so many students in a room?" said Sona Vikas, PRO of the varsity.

She added: "The man who is leading the protests is not even a student here. He has not cleared most of his exams. We provide world-class atmosphere for our students to succeed."

Meanwhile, the students continued their protest outside the college campus. "We will be sitting here until our demands are met," Anil said.

The university was established in 2012 in Sector 55 of Gurugram. Its website shows collaboration with universities in the US and Australia.
