Beginning January 1, all heavy vehicles will have to stick to left lane, or else face hefty fines. Working towards decongestion of city roads and to fight pollution, the Delhi government on Thursday issued directives to the Transport Department, asking officials to ensure compliance of lane rules by heavy vehicles, starting the new year.

Sources in the Transport Department said the order was aimed towards implementation of bus lane discipline and route-rationalisation, which will help curb pollution in the national Capital.

“The Public Works Department (PWD) has already marked 600-700 km of roads and the Transport Department has now been asked to ensure lane discipline. The department has been asked to reiterate and publicise the campaign, along with the fine applicable in case of violations,” said a Transport Department official.

The official added that around 10 teams from the Transport and Enforcement Departments will be deployed, approximately at every 5km, to ensure implementation of the order. “The campaign will be monitored by Delhi Transport Minister Satyendar Jain, with daily reports on implementation of the orders,” he added.

Sources said the campaign is a part of route rationalisation scheme of the Delhi government, which had previously ordered the implementation of a 2012 DMITS report for de-congestion of the national Capital. The report had suggested introducing medium-sized and mini buses within the public transport network to cater to diverse needs of different routes.

At present, there are around 5,800 buses, including 4,200 DTC and 1,600 cluster buses plying across the city. Apart from these, close to 48,000 trucks also enter the national Capital, choking the roads.
