Light spells of rain accompanied with a squall in Delhi-NCR on Wednesday evening brought the much needed respite to people from a hot day in the city.

After a scorching hot day with the maximum temperature recorded at 40.2 degrees Celsius, the scattered rains were much welcome.

According to MET officials, such thunderstorm activity is likely to occur till May 12 in Delhi and neighbouring regions.

"The maximum temperature recorded at 40.2 degrees Celsius, was a notch above normal while the minimum temperature settling at 23.7 degrees Celsius was three degrees above normal," said a MET official.

The humidity levels hovered between 63 per cent and 66 per cent, the official said.

"While there is some respite expected till May 12, there seem to be no chances of heavy showers any soon. The maximum and minimum temperatures during this period are likely to settle between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius and 26 to 27 degrees Celsius, respectively," said the official.

The current phenomenon of thunderstorms and light showers, according to officials, are a result of moisture convergence in Northern India.

Last Saturday, May 6, was recorded the hottest day during this month in five years with the mercury soaring to 43.7 degrees Celsius.
