The 'Spiderman' burglar who climbed balconies and jumped off from flats on parked cars below, has been arrested from the Tughlakabad Extension area on Monday evening. The police said the accused is a drug addict, and to fulfil his cravings for drugs as also to get easy money he started stealing and indulging in petty offences.

According to the police, the accused has been identified as Vargese (20), who was previously involved in 14 cases of attempt to murder, night burglary, theft and snatching. The police have recovered 9 stolen mobile phones from his possession.

"On Monday, a lady complained that an unknown person entered her house through the balcony. When she raised an alarm the accused jumped from the 1st-floor of the house and ran away. The complainant later found that her three mobile phones and cash were stolen. A case was registered," said Chinmoy Biswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police, south-east.

During investigation, the CCTVs installed under Nigehbaan Scheme were scanned and in one of the footages the accused was seen entering the house through a balcony and coming out of the house by jumping on the roof of a parked car. However, accused had covered his face. Based on secret information and body structure, Vargese was apprehended.

"Initially, the accused denied his involvement but after sustained interrogation he broke down and confessed. He disclosed that he used to commit crimes to get easy money for his cigarettes, drugs and liquor. He used to enter houses with a covered face and used to operate alone. He used to select the target one or two days before breaking into the houses and then commit the crime in the late-night hours," said Biswal.

The police recovered the three mobiles which were stolen from the complainant's house. Furthermore, six other stolen mobiles were recovered from the house of the accused.

Vargese has previously been involved in 14 cases, and after coming out of the jail in 2017 he started stealing mobile phones/wrist watches and other costly items from his targets.
