Speeding car rams cop, crushes 2 DU students, kills one

The car stopped only after hitting a divider, locals told police. They also said that the driver, on seeing the three injured, managed to flee before public could overpower him.

In a freak accident, a driver first rammed into a Delhi Constable and then crushed two Delhi University students, leaving one of them dead in North Delhi's Maurice Nagar on Friday morning. Police are trying to nab the driver who fled from the spot.

According to senior police officers, a PCR call was received reporting the accident around 10:40 am. Police said, an Alto car, bearing registration number — DL2CAA7455, was found at the spot in an accidental condition opposite the Operation Cell office of police in Maurice Nagar.

Locals and witnesses told the police that the car first hit a Delhi police motorcyclist Constable Mukesh and then hit a pedestrian, later identified as 19-year-old Kapil Ratnu, a first year student of Ramjas College, hailing from Jaisalmer in Rajasthan.

"The car then also hit another pedestrian, a woman identified as Jagriti, a third year student of Political Science of the same college. All the injured were rushed to a hospital where Kapil Ratnu was declared dead while Jagriti was admitted to the trauma centre. She is in a critical state," a police officer said.

The car stopped only after hitting a divider, locals told police. They also said that the driver, on seeing the three injured, managed to flee before public could overpower him.

Police said the Constable was said to be out of danger, but has been admitted for treatment. Police have also traced the registered owner of the car as one RC Vyas, a resident of Kalyan Bagh in Kalyan Puri area.

"A case of rash driving and under IPC 304A for causing death due to negligence has been registered. The incident is being probed," said the officer.

Police said that the family of the deceased and injured have been informed and the body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
