A day after JNU student leader Umar Khalid was attacked by a man in the high-security Lutyen's zone, the case has been transferred to the elite unit of Delhi Police- Special Cell. Khalid had recently filed a complaint with the Delhi Police that he and Gujarat's Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani had received death threats from a man who claimed to be Ravi Pujari but despite that no efforts were made to trace the messages.

The Delhi Polie have scanned several CCTV footages from the area and in three of them the accused who is wearing a cap, white shirt and blue jeans can be seen running towards the Patel Chowk Metro station.

"I was returning after having tea. One person came from behind, pushed me down and tried to fire at me. I ran for my life. He fled from there," Khalid said.

The incident took place outside the Constitution Club around 2.30 pm where Khalid was to attend a function 'Khauff Se Azaadi' (Freedom from Fear), organised by United Against Hate and featuring speakers such as lawyer Prashant Bhushan, Delhi University professor Apoorvanand and the late Rohith Vemula's mother Radhika Vemula.
